Tranny Issue with my 85 VII

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: mespock

I was going take my Mark VII on our trip this weekend but, due to an acting up Tranny I didn't.

Here's the question - Tranny has been running good since I picked up the Mark VII June 28th.

The Mark had been sitting for 6 to 12 months.

Guy claimed the tranny had been flushed and filters changed. (Amsoil was used or is the Tranny oil that was used last time it was changed).

On Thursday I drove the Mark, it drove fine all day. On my final drive for the day after sitting for a bit 1 to 2 hours (these were short drives of 1 to 3 miles, Boscobel is small) it didn't want to shift. It would shift into first but then it would rev and not shift into 2nd or take longer than normal getting into 2nd then into 3rd. (Now this may be 2nd to 3rd not 1st to 2nd where this is happening).

I took it out on the Hwy to test it a little more and drove for about 5 miles. I would go into 3rd but it took a lot longer than usual.

I then drove it home and parked it as I didn't want to cause any damage.

Any Ideas? I was thinking that maybe due to it sitting so long that it has some gunk in the tranny and it was clogging the filter. Hoping for something simple

Have you checked the TV (throttle valve) cable?

Yeah, look before you drive the car... If that thing slipped off or broke, you are in for a surprise.

Don't scare me.

I thought the 85's did not have the TV bushing, so there was not a major concern there...?

isn't your car carbureted? It's probably set up different than in the pictures. My friend has an '85 town car that is doing something similar... Trans shifts late and harsh. Do you know when the last time the bands were adjusted?

I think I found it.

Coming off the Carb or near is the linkage. The clip came off. Tomorrow I will get a new clip. I am hoping that this is the problem.

My personal mechanic (a good friend of mine who just moved up from Alabama) said that this should be my problem and that the way the Mark had been shifting there shouldn't be any problem with my Tranny.

Can't wait to find out tomorrow.

Will let you know if the problem gets solved tomorrow.

Cool. It sounds like that was the problem. Was it different than pictured from that website? As long as you didn't drive it real hard, real long, you should be in good shape.

Hey Hey, she be fixed thanks for the suggestions.

You ought to send a donation to Joey as his website just saved you a thousand + if you had driven that tranny much further! That's what I do when a message board saves my ass BIG time
