1994 Continental Air Ride Issues

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have got a 1994 Lincoln Continental Exec. Love the car and the air ride but I am having some problems. Occasionally when I turn the car off the air ride compressor will come on and pump the back end of the car up as far as it will go. When you turn the car on it will stay this way and the ride control light will come on. I have tried:

turning the system on and off
reconnecting the air compressor
reconnecting the struts them selves to their connectors
smacking the ride height senors
reconnecting the air ride computer

Both rear struts are good and do not leak. Let me know what you all think. I hope there is a solution, because this is getting old!

Thanks

It sounds like the vent solenoid in the compressor is stuck and therefor preventing the system to release the air from the rear. It could also be that the height sensors are out of adjustment. However, if this is a new development I would check the compressor first, especially since you have the accompanying warning light.

Just wondering ,why would it come on after the car is off and only pump up the rear.

To tell you the truth, it sounds like bad height sensors. They may be on there way out. Height sensors are usually the most common cause of height problems. If the air compressor is pumping wierd as you said. Although it could be the air compressor itself.

rear height sensor is my guess.

Air ride will adjust up or down for up to 1 hr after ignition off and exit vehicle for load leveling.

I checked the height sensors in the front and the one on the driver's left had two wires that had been cut or worn off. I am getting a new sensor and want to check the ones in the back. A guy at Arnott told me there was only one height sensor in the trunk and it wasn't on the struts. Can anyone confirm this?

Your vehicle has three height sensors, two on each side in the front, and one to control the height of the rear. The rear height sensor is located on the passenger side axle. If the car stays jacked up ALL the time, I would have the compressor checked. Otherwise I think you are doing the right thing by swapping out the sensor. If you need anything else, let me know.

Thanks,
Strutmasters Team

It does't do it all the time. It does it occasinally for a few hours, then will work fine for a day or so.

there is NO sensor in the trunk, there is one in the rear, on the righter side of the rear suspension lower arms.

its round, and has a tiny little maybe 4" arm attached to it

my air ride has developed a computer problem. Sometimes when i turn the car off it stays normal, sometimes deflates front, sometimes rear, never both, sometimes it inflates one or the other. Really weird.
