Old School Lincoln vs. Old School Cadillac

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

How about a contest between Old School Lincoln and Old School Cadillac? Including old school cars in a contest with new technology is like comparing apples and oranges.

I would define Old School as anything that qualifies for an Historic Automobile plate. In Michigan that's any car over 25 years.

I would disqualify my Mark II convertible as it is not a Lincoln or a Cadillac. It was made by the Continental Division of Ford Motor Company. Their only product was the Continental Mark II. The division was folded into Lincoln when the Mark II program was cancelled in 1957.

However, I'd love to compete with "Blinky" our '77 Town Car. It's black on black and only has 16,000 miles on it. Everything is original except the water pump, battery and exhaust system.

There are times I miss my '76 Caddy though. All 500 Cu.In. of it!

Posted by: pepperman

Barry, can we supercharge the lawnmower? I'm in, where you at?

Posted by: barry2952

Just outside Detroit. Come on down. We'll be showing the car at the Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance August 1st. Come see us there. We'll be at the Glenmoor Gathering of Significant Vehicle in Canton Ohio mid-Sept and The Radnor Hunt Club Concours near Philadelphia in late Sept.

I like the idea of supercharging the lawnmower

I own two stock Lincolns and would be interested in racing against two stock Cadillacs.

Must be East coast as in NJ, PA,MD, DE.

1988 OldSchool5

1976 OldSchool7

hmmm. I wonder who could sponsor such a meet?

Old school Lincoln vs old school cadillac? Well, that depends on the decade. For me, I think I prefer Lincoln to Cadillac in the 60's and 70's, but prefer Cadillac to Lincoln in the 80's and 90's (the 60's and 80's are hard calls, but there's no doubt for the 70's and 90's...well, up through 96 anyway, then caddy was dumb and dropped the fleetwood, then in 98 Lincoln performed a miracle on it's Town Car and Continental... so I guess Cadillac til they killed the Fleetwood, then Lincoln thereafter)

Posted by: OldSchool1

I can dig it.
I have the 70s and 80s covered.

Posted by: Moby and Lucille

This decade is a little wierd as far as that goes for me. For overall product quality or at least coolness, my vote goes to Cadillac. But the monkey wrench is the Town Car. It's the traditional boat, rear drive, full size, body on frame, V8... it's the last of the boat cars (along with the FCV and MGM that is) and Cadillac doesn't really have a parallel to compete against it.

Don't say the Deville! They are smaller and FWD, they are what parraleled the Continental before it was shelved, no, the last Cadillac Town Car equivalent bowed out after the 96 model year. I guess what I'm saying, is that if Caddy had an honest to God Town Car fighter that was as good as the rest of the current caddys or Lincoln did not have the Town Car anymore, then my vote would go hands down to cadillac, but since cadillac doesn't have a fleetwood anymore, then I think I'd actually cast my lot with Lincoln....it's that big of a deal to me.

Cheers!

Don't say the Deville? It IS the Deville. The Deville was huge in the 60's,70's and early 80's.There in the same class.Full size luxury sedan.Thats like saying the Escalade and Navigator aren't in the same class because the Navi is smaller. The Deville has been the Town Cars competitor since day one.The DTS still is.The Seville was the Continental's competitor.

Looks like I'll have to uncover the 1987 DeVille in my back yard and put it head to head agains my 1988 (stock) Lincoln Mark VII.

What are you trying to say?Who said anything about a Mark VII?

Oh God,lets shoot Cadillac down because they decided to use there own exclusive engines in the late 80's.Man,thats too bad they didn't drop a Corvette engine under the hood.Too bad Lincoln did the stupid thing and put in a high horsepower muscle car engine into a luxury car in the middle of Americas 80's economic crisis.Maybe thats why there in the position there in now.Id have to say Cadillac did the right thing by putting a low horse small V8 into the Deville.Gradually increasing the power as the economy got better.A bigger engine with high horsepower equals a gas guzzling car(which the Mark was at the time)which also equals a very stupid move in the 80's when the economy sucked. Not to mention, the two cars aren't even in the same class.Go buy yourself a 1998 LSC and you and I will go head to head and I'll show you a fair comparison race.I can guarrentee the results will be in favor of me.Not to mention the Northstar is an exclusive Cadillac engine.Up until recently being used in other GM's.The Northstar was built for and only for Cadillac at the time. With no intentions of putting it in a Bonneville 13 years later.Where as the Mark always used the Ford engine through the 1990's.Ford was so worried about Jaguar, the didn't invest squat into Lincoln to do the necessary things that need to be done to a luxury car to allow for it to compete. And after about 5 billion big ones and what,15 years now?Jaguar still has poor sales. And Lincoln is shot to sh!t.GM's work into Cadillac has finally paid off and Cadillac is now third in annual luxury car sales, behind Lexus at first and BMW at second.Yes folks.MB is behind Cadillac in sales,as well as Lincoln in the 23rd and a half place.

Great idea for a thread, though I can't take a side, as both have hit home runs in my mind. From the 63' Lincoln Continental, to the 49' Caddy fastback. Love that Mark II my friend, and even though you're technically right for all intents and purposes I'm dubbing it a Lincoln. Would a Versailes count or a Cimmaron? Just kidding.

I'm a member of the North East Lincoln and Cadillac Enthusiasts Car Club (I got a t-shirt) and an even longer standing member of this forum (Joey gave me the t-shirt personally) LOL!!!

You're right on like three fronts and incorrect on one; The Lincoln Mark VII. It's a Luxury Sport Coupe with about six different models and four different flavors. The Ford 302 was installed out of necessity and better marketing with a proven product. The previous Mark engine, the 460, was literally outlawed and was last installed in 1976.

The transverse Cadillacs of the 80s mixed fuel efficiency with power and dressed it up in a very OldSchool way and stuck a DeVille badge on it. Instand success!

I collect Lincoln Mark VIIs.

If it were not for a cracked windshield and an empty pocket (I'm also an official Member of The Broke-Dude-Club) I'd be driving the front wheel drive DeVille and saving about $20.00 per pay in fuel and about $2100.00 a year in insurance. That is, until good weather came back and I pulled my toys out of the garage again

Two different, and distinct rides.

Lincoln, large horizontal hood.

cadillac, sharp nose into the road.

No question which ride is preferable.

Lincolns ROCK.

Im a big fan of the '56 Coupe Deville, with gold trim. Also '59 Eldorado Brougham.I really like I believe the '68(?) Lincoln Continental with the suicide doors.Theres a lot of retro going on these days.Lincoln should bring those back.

Just so you know Oldschool 1, the 460 was last used in a Lincoln in 1978. discontinued in 79' when only a 400 was available.

No, I am not "bashing" anything. I am explaining the difference between the two cars, especially in the sixties, but also later.

Owners of both cars would argue the heck out of the issue, at cocktail parties, or whatever. They were both strong in their opinion. It is simply a matter of which ride you prefer, and it is not just looks, there was a distinctly different philosophy of the way the two cars drove, and handled.
