ABS Pump replacement / bleeding /cycling

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: jrhartman

My '97 needs to have the ABS pump replaced, I have found it and it looks to be a snap to pull out and replace. I have read that the ABS Pump needs to be "cycled" to bleed the ABS system correctly. The instructions that I have seen on the bleeding procedure require and >$2k scanning tool. :wtf: Is there any other way to cycle the ABS pump so I can properly bleed the system after I put in the new pump?

I tried to search under "ABS bleeding" but this system won't search "ABS" it just pulls back results for "bleeding" and I couldn't find the info that I need.

Thanks in advance for you help.

I've been trying to find that stuff out also and shat iv come to is that very few smaller shops have abs equipment.

The best place to do abs is the Dealership where you car brand is from like in our case a Lincoln dealership because every manufacturer, from what someone told me, its to much money for a shop to buy the computer stuff for abs for every car out there so yes I say take it to the dealer to have it done right. Sorry I know its not the answer you wanted I have the same problem

bigdog: almost everyone of your incoherant posts almost always ends with "take it to the dealer", which is not always the answer

does anyone know if the unit at the link below will do the job?

I don't know if it works, but I'm glad you posted that link. For $44, it's definately worth looking into.

NO
that unit will NOT work on a 97..

i am in the SAME boat.. i need to bleed my abs pump too.. that tool is for a Teves Mark IV system, 97 and 98 have a Teves Mark 20 system. the tool is not compatible. trust me, i have one sitting on the front seat of my 97 that isnt any good to me..
I am going to try the redneck ABS bleed method. drive the car up the block hit the brakes and let the ABS cycle and MAYBE pump the air out.. its worth a shot..

and i might end up at a shop in the end anyway, depends on the outcome of the driving method...

The ONLY way your going to get all the air out of the system, is to use the right tool. What will happen is that the brakes will work o.k. until you least expect a problem. In other words, when you make a panic stop one day the pedal with go to the floor.

The actual tool you need is the adaptor that connects the wiring harness of the car to a Ford breakout box. If all you need to do is bleed the system after replacing a hard part, you simply put the adaptor on end of the harness and switch it from "harness" to "bleed". Then hit the button. Unfortunately, the dealer is probably going to be the only one with this adaptor.

Good luck.

yes, if you have a gen1.. theres an ABS connector behind the drivers headlight you can plug the Thexton 133 device into and electronically bleed it.
gen2's you need a scan tool that connects to the OBDII port.. which is, as said above, more or less $2k..
gotta love ford switching brake systems with only 2 years left in a model.. thanks alot

If you think dealers spend a million dollars per model for ABS equipment you are a bigger fool then I initially gave you credit for.

That is hilarious. I am on here trying to actually get some answers to technical questions and you call me a troll? You are the one that has followed my every post with jibberish that is spelled so poorly that it looks like a foreign language. The purpose of these types of forums is to learn and teach others how to fix/do things themselves. Your immediate response to anything is "take it to the dealer", which doesn't help at all.

When I asked how to replace the pump itself a member had responded with the correct procedure and you chimed in with your "take it to the dealer because you need million dollar aqupment" response.

I then asked if my system was TEVES IV or Bousch, but I found out it was TEVES Mark 20. You chimed in with "you have to take it to a shop", which had nothing to do with my question.

You tell me who the troll is? Somehow I don't see the person that is asking legitimate questions as the troll. If you don't have anything that actually contributes to the thread, please keep your unintelligible remarks out of my threads.

in another post you even sed you where gona take it to a SHop so how about that dont start somthing you can stop man
I know about this couse i had my ABS pump out and have to replace it also and have been to all the shops around her
