How hard is it / instructions on how to install the Baumann shift kit myself

How hard is it to install the Baumann shift kit myself and also change the tranny fluid. I know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about the inside of an automatic transmission, so I am scared I would mess something up and not know it. Can anyone here who has done it themselves let me know what is involved? Do I need to have the car up on a lift? Any help would be great, thanks.

Also, to install the kit, do I need to drain the fluid?

On the website it says it comes with instructions, but I am a total transmission dummy, which is why I asked if it was truly possible to install it myself.

Baumann's instructions are quite comprehensive and easy to follow. I tackled the job on my '93 MVIII having NO experience with automatic transmissions and got through it with good results. So if you have basic mechanical ability and FOLLOW THEIR INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE VALVE BODY MODIFICATION VERY CAREFULLY, you'll be fine. You don't need a hoist; just jack up the car and use jackstands or drive it up on ramps. You'll drain most all of the transmission fluid when you drop the transmission pan. It is messy; really messy. After I had my tranny pan off I installed a drain plug, which I would recommend. Baumann will sell you one. Have at it!

thanks Dan, that is exactly what i was looking for

I assume I can just fill it up after through the dipstick, with Mercon V? Any special instructions required for filling?

Yep, through the dipstick. If your car is a '67 Continental, though, use Mercon III or whatever tranny fluid type the owners manual calls for. As I was typing my first reply I was thinking your car is a Mark VIII!

One other thing, I also purchased this part from Baumann along with the valve body recal kit:

BCV-1 Improved Bypass Clutch Control Valve Sleeve and Plunger for All AODE and 4R70W Transmissions

I see they have some new items now. I would give them a call and let them advise you what you need based on the mileage on your transmission and its condition. If you haven't done the 1-2 and 2-3 accumulator upgrade do it when you have the pan off. This upgrade is a must for better basic performance from your transmission.

Don’t forget to drain the torque converter, it holds a couple of quarts.

how do i drain the torque converter?

I think there is a drain plug on the Torque Converter....

There is a drain plug on the converter. There is a grommet on the bottom of the bell housing. Remove. Turn the engine till the drain plug is visible in the hole by putting a wrench on the crank on the front or use a flat head screwdriver and pry against the case and the flex plate to turn the motor.

Just drain and plug it back up you will have to check on how much fluid the transmission will take I think its 12 qts (I don’t feel like looking right now). There is an over flow valve if you put too much in.
Just make sure you use mercon v.
