Guys with 3.73 gears

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

So today, I ordered a driveshaft from Danny's, a set of 3.73 Gears with a Trak lok thinghie (<-- scientific name) from Max, and an AFPR from Geno. In other words, no more toys for the Lincoln for 3 weeks.

My question to the 3.73 gear crowd:

Max said the 21 tooth Purple??? speedo gear is off by about 15%. Is this correct?

Geno said his "purple" gear is damned near dead on.

Please advise so that I may call Max in the AM to order a purple gear if it is indeed accurate.

Thanks a bunch.

gen1 or gen2?
my gen2's speedo read right w/o the purple gear, but the shift points were off.. i needed a tune to fix that. IIRC the gen2 cars take the speedo reading from the abs sensors...(?)

Sorry. Gen II.

You should be good as long as you keep stock 16 wheels. My speedometer is off about 3-5 mph. And yes, front ABS sensor is the speedo drive on Gen-II's, but they still could use a little correcting...

Thanks Evillally.

So what you're saying is that the speedometer is getting its data from the transmission, and the computer gets its vehicle speed data from one of the front ABS sensors?

Maybe im misreading your last post, but if one of the ABS sensors is feeding the speedo, then what does the tranny gear feed?

I guess what I'm asking is, what feeds the computer's VSS lead? The tranny or one of the front ABS sensors?

Thanks

While were on the topic of ABS sensors, what does the speedo gear have to do with them? Ive always wondered....

Posted by: Grifter

the speedo takes its info from the abs sensors, the computer uses the "speedo gear" (which is actually a OSS gear, Output Shaft Sensor, since it doesnt actually have anything to do with the speedo) to set shift points and the like.

This is a little off topic but Midnightdrifter, how does your car feel now with the 4.56 gears? Is it a huge difference or is a gear change over estimated?

Posted by: StraDog

Mdnitedrifter... That car is soooo damn HOT. I want a ride with those gears in now... Can you say DAYUMMM, 4.56's ! HOTTTTT.
