1990 Lincoln Towncar Transmission

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Am a proud owner of a 1990 Lincoln Towncar with 100,000 miles and finally am having problems with the transmission. The transmission is slipping and the fluid smells lightly burned. My question is there any possible way this transmission can be saved or am I looking at rebuilding same. Thanks

Make sure you check detent cable or throttle pressuer cable as it is called. On throttle linkage. These had a plastic spacer grommet that always wears out and falls off. This causes slack in the cable and lowere tranny line presser and causes slipping...If you tighten it up about as tight as it will go and still allow the throttle to open all the way, it might buy you some time...
also Lucas tranny additive is good on half burnt transmissions.

Everything is just a crutch to buy you very little miles.

IMHO just bite the bullet and rebuild it...(An excuse for upgrades? )

You can replace it with a uded one from a town car up to 1991, even though the motor is differnt, its a direct fit. 1991 only, then obviosly 1990 and below.

Or you can rebuild. i dont know whats cheaper.
