Replacing Alternator

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Ok, i've gotten it narrowed down the alternator being bad. i bought a brand new battery but i am not going to buy the alternator until i know for sure its not a major pain in the ass to replace.
basically i would like to know how to replace it. simple r&r.
i have a craftsman tool set, some allen wrenches, and i live in an apartment complex so that means NO GARAGE (yeah it sucks) sometimes i wish i still lived at home where i could use my dad's tools and garage (he was a professional mechanic for 12 years, so that means unlimited tools) but he is 2,300 miles back east, LOL.
do i need the tensioner pulley tool as well (you know, the really long bar with the socket on the end of it to loosen the serpentine belt) ?
thanks again guys.!

its SIMPLE
remove the belt (1/2" breaker bar or atleast a 1/2" rachet needed)
take the intech cover off
remove the bracket that holds the top of the alt in place. (4 bolts dont remember size)
disconnect power wire and plug (wire is 10mm)
loosen the bolts that hold the alt to the block on the bottom (2 13mm bolts)
lift off..
reverse to install..

yeh, i did this last weak, my dad showed me what to do and it was simple. hey, if a 16 y.o. can do it with a little finger pointing, you should come out shining

ok. simple enough.
i am pretty mechanically inclined. this is just going to be the first major repair that i do to this car and i wanted to know if there were any pitfalls to watch out for
next biggest thing i did to a lincoln was about 2.5 years ago. i helped out a friend that was building a 302 and dropping it into a 1991 LSC SE. pain in the ass but we got it done and it ran fine.

thanks a million guys!

One pitfall you could get into would be on the belt. When I did my alternator I didn't check to be sure I had the belt on all the pullies correctly and shreaded the belt in 5 seconds. Nows a good time to replace your belt if you haven't.

yeah. well operation Alternator install is COMPLETE! it took me 20 minutes of labor, 3 sockets (10mm, 13mm, and 8mm (for the battery) ), 18'' breaker bar with 1/2'' drive, flathead screw driver.
and i made DAMN SURE the belt was on all accessories before i cranked 'er up to check the voltage.
voltage was a little above 14v and about 13.5v with A/C, headlights, radio on. i guess thats normal huh?

You did the right thing when you did that. I was finishing up the engine swap in my 94 when I installed the new trans, and dad put the belt on halfassed. I cranked it up, and noticed a bit if a roughness to the idle. I got out of the drivers seat, walked to the front of the car, and notced my belt was smoking it's self aginst my 400 dollar powdercoating job. Needless to say, one day I have to remove the timing cover to have it redone now.

Also......Your voltage sounds about right.
