hosting a web site???

Hi,

I'd like to host my own web site. But the problem is, I don't know how. That is, what do I need to do to get my page out onto the web, with my computer being the host? Does it suffice to just get a domain or does it require more? do i need a program on my pc for hosting? any help or any tip would be great!
