I still have a few things to do but the basics of the site are in place. THe chatroom we have is temporary as the real one wont be available for just a couple weeks -- im working on the photo gallery, but that might take a few weeks as well, but ill have those up ASAP.

SO -- I have several questions of you all. First, what do you think of how the place is designed? is it easy to find your way around, look good etc?

Are there things not here that you would like to see?

One main thing we need to make this site sucessful is content. We need to get people posting technical questions and answers - we also need more people around to post more stuff -- so how do we get about 20 people here - and get everyone posting? Any suggestions?

Without going into specifics, there will be rewards for those who are the most helpful. Eventually, parts of the site will go pay - and those who help the most to set things up will be given lifetime charter membership.

I have so many plans for this place. Im starting to solicit vendors who will give members a healthy discount, and im putting together plans for raffles which will be for fantastic prizes - all kinds of great stuff in mind.

Lets hear your thoughts!

A suggestion...
Instead of having categories listed like below, instead have them either under the the individual makes (ie: Mark VII>Electrical or LS>Suspension and Brakes) to keep it more organized and neat... Then you won't have people posting the same thing in both sections if ya know what I mean...

The forums are done that way because some things apply across the board for all makes.

i.e. wheels n tires.

However, I am trying to come up with a few ways to clean things up a little. I agree, it looks a little cluttered.

Posted by: Icarus

aie... I've been looking 'round for the past lil bit... too many categories...

If ya put the sections like 'Suspension and Electrical' etc under each make, then it would clean up the main page some. People that want to check out stuff will most likely stick with/in the sections of vehicles they own (I'll be mostly checking out the Mark VII for example)...

The site is looking great, some spring cleaning of the sections and it will rock

I've picked up a few mistakes (well, not mistakes, but stuff that doesn't look right) I'll let you know about if ya want me to post em here or ?

Posted by: Joeychgo

Sure -- let me know everything you see. After so many late nights putting things together, im blind. Please -- give it to me with both barrels. My goal is to make the absolute best site/club on the net!

Posted by: Icarus

Kewl... I used to do a few sites as well for family businesses so know whats it's like to go squirrely looking at this stuff all the time
I've never used or tried a forum or vB code, so can't help there, I can just let ya know what I see and hope you don't think I'm being a pain (ya said you wanted suggestions)

The smiley icon in the reply to screen only shows a narrow strip with a few of em on it, theres no way to scroll over select others....

Screen sizes less than 1024x768 you need to scroll to the right to see whole thing.. I think it's because of the header picture up top...

The Lincoln vs Cadillac.com > Site Basics > Suggestions & Comments > Need everyones thoughts please.... text in some screens could be a bit smaller, it stands out way to much, in some its fine...

No [img] for the signatures? I know some places don't like this, but 'tis nice to have As for the profile pic and the avatar... the profile pic could maybe allowed to be a bit bigger (250x100 maybe?)

In the reply to box, there seems to be 'spaces' or carrige returns already entered before we even put anything in... makes for weird edits or posts from the extra lines... same with the 'cut and paste' into the edit boxes, it cuts eveything (tables etc) but when pasted and submitted, only shows text, hard to tell how it will turn out when doing this...

These are a few things that jumped at me. I msut be off for bed now. I'll check back and see how it's going... I know I wouldn't want to be in your shoes, gl

The following errors occurred when this message was submitted:
  1. You have included too many images in your signature or in your previous post. Please go back and correct the problem and then continue again.

Images include use of smilies, the vB code [img] tag and HTML <img> tags. The use of these is all subject to them being enabled by the administrator.

Posted by: Icarus

I was going to add in my post that Ratings are not necessary for threads and it came up with the above message (to many smilies???)

Posted by: Joeychgo

WOW... ok. Some of what you talked about are just settngs Ihavent gotton to just yet, such as img for signatures, the size of avatars, number of smileys, etc. The reason those are limited is for conservation of bandwidth. However, it comes that way by default and I ahve control to change those settings, and I will be doing so soon.

The header we have is temporary as Geno (onebadmk8) has promised to design us a nice new one.

Yes, too many smileys -- the system only permits so many images in a post, but thats another setting I havent gotton to yet.

Im not sure if I can shut the ratings off, another thing to look at.

Ive had the sofware almost a month and FINALLY got a manual for it the other day. Its only 360 pages light reading. LOL

Posted by: Icarus

Oh, the header should turn out good in Geno's hands. He's great at stuff like that

360 pages eh? I'm glad I never got into forums etc lol... j/k

Keep up the great work, it's looking amazing so far!

Posted by: Joeychgo

Thanks. Did I mention im learning the little things like HTML as I go along? LOL IM totally lost sometimes

Posted by: JSev22

how about a 100x100 sized avatar.
I also agree, too many choices for the forums but I guess you can wait and see which ones are most popular and start pruning the lesser or unused ones.

BTW I see you have joined both LOL and FvC.....perhaps an introductory post on each that includes a small mention about this site on top of your car info and why you joined etc.....something tasteful and not spam-like as some others have done in the past.

John

oh yeah, how about giving us the option to NOT have signature attachment with each posting....I always forget to uncheck the box before I post....

I think the other non car related forums detract from the point of this board. They're interesting but the add up to clutter. One board for all things not related to the other board would clean it up a lot. I like having the default of including the signature. Perhaps a way to unselect this feature for some users is best.

Posted by: Joeychgo

As time gooes on the forums which dont get usage will be deleted or replaced. Forums will be moved around and organized more as time goes on. We are kinda throwing everything against the wall to see what sticks.

Talk about stump the chump! Man!, I haven't used that one since windows 3.1 and it STILL cracks me up. You Man, I'm glad you got a thick skin. Me and a TON of other guys and girls flying through here are former Bulletin Board System operators and KNOW how to bust your chops.

We also know how to get 460 posts a day. So watch yourself Bucko and make sure to leave (no fat) Milk and (low fat) cookies out for us.
