Engine Cleaners???

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Black87LSC

The heater hose in my T/C decided to throw up all over my engine compartment lastnight, and I want to clean everything. I am hesitant to use a lot of things, because I have never done this before. I know a lot of you (especially the VIII guys) have cleaned your engine compartments, and I'm curious what you use and what I should cover up and/or avoid cleaning... THANKS

to clean the engine bay i use degreaser it gets the job done i try not to get my alternator to wet

I use Simple Green Automotive. Make sure that the engine is a bit warm, but NOT hot. Works great, basically just follow the directions and you should be good to go. I cover my alternator with a big zip lock baggie and do not spray it on high pressure.

Spray the engine down with Windex and Armor-All or Black Magic detailer. Close the hood. 5 minutes later, open the hood and lightly hose with water. Close hood, let dry. Then, spray with Armor-All again. Close hood. 5 minutes later, wipe excess Armor-All and you're done.

Another great tool in an invention called "The Steam Shark", which is a portable steam cleaner that you can find at Sears for under $100. I heard it works teh bawls on engines...

Thanks guys, I noticed a factory machined gap between the EFI emblem/plate and the manifold. I'm gunna make sure to stay away from that!! I wonder why that's there.....

On my 87' Town Car I just use the high-pressure washer you can get for like a buck for 3 minutes.

Cleans it right up and not a problem yet...

That thread is about you guys with the 4.6, I got an '89 with the 5.0. The plugs aren't on the top like yours are... I will probably buy the Simple Green stuff, and use the mister at the car wash tomorrow. I will cover the alternator, and only use a damp rag with Simple Green to be on the safe side.

Nope - and hasn't been a problem yet...
