New to the LS

I recently purchased a 2000 LS for $4500. Did I get ripped off? Did carfax report and it came up clean. Car runs like a dream considering it has 140K on it. Only problem I see so far is headlight leaks when I wash it.

$4500 sounds reasonable to me. It all depends on how well it was cared for before you got it. The LS is a reliable car and it has some well documented issues but none are critical enough to warrant any major repair bills. I have 77K miles on my 2001 LS and it has been pretty maintenance free in those miles I've had it.

im glad to hear you got such a beautiful car for such a low price but it also scares me on how much my car is going to be worth when i sell it in about 4 years the depreciation value on this car SUCKS!! I mean what other year 2000 luxury car can you get for $4500

The Kelly site is down for some reason, but I seem to recall typical value on a 2000 with average mileage is 10 - 12K. IMHO, ALL American cars depreciate at a faster rate than Imports. Automobiles are possibly the worst choice, in terms of an investment, particularly when buying new. Most depreciation occurs in the first year of ownership, so from a strictly dollars-and-cents standpoint, one should always buy 1-2 year old cars, thereby letting the original owner take the hit. For me, it's all about enjoyment and general reliability. I typically drive a car for six years/100K miles, until the extended warranty expires or repairs begin to approach the cost of replacement with a "nearly new" model. If I were buying any American car with 140K miles for $4500, I would anticipate spending 2-4K in repairs/maintenence over the course of 3-4 years of ownership, particularly given the high cost of parts/labor on these cars. Coils and transmission would be my primary concern; since issues such as the window regulators, headlight seals, infamous front end "clunk" and rear view mirror have probably already occurred and have been repaired by the original owner.

I can't remember where I read this but it said the only car with worst depreciation than the Lincoln LS V-6 is the Dodge or Plymouth Neon.

You could probably part it out and get that back out of it.
